When 2020 rolled around, and ten years could easily be ticked off with a nice round number, the best-performing asset of the past 10 years emerged as Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency is just over 10 years old, so to say it has had an eventful decade is an understatement as it has gone from being with barely anything to topping $20,000.
But it is more than just Bitcoin’s performance in the market that has been so impressive, it is also the growth of the blockchain technology, and the entire industry that has blossomed around Bitcoin. The decentralized cryptocurrency has managed to attract institutional interest and is being more normalised as the years go on.
However, the boom of Bitcoin is one thing, and it could be seen as a one-time thing, yet there are suggestions that Bitcoin could well be the best performing asset of the next 10 years as the coin looks to find its niche in an evolving world. Raoul Pal, a former executive at Goldman Sachs, is one such person that sees this coming to be.
The best thing to bet on
According to Pal, who is now the co-founder and CEO at Real Vision, an on-demand financial TV channel where major investors share their best business ideas,
“If I could only own one asset for the next 10 years, it would be bitcoin $BTC. It encapsulates all of my larger macro views and feels like the point on the far horizon we are headed to, in some shape or form. Yes, like gold too and many other things but BTC risk/reward beats all.”
Pal has a long history with Bitcoin. He was an early investor who sold all of his holdings in June of 2017, calling BTC “a solution looking for a problem.” But in an August 2019 interview on the Stephen Livera podcast, Pal said he thinks the highly volatile and risky cryptocurrency is worth investing in even if there’s only a 1 percent chance it succeeds.
“I know all these macro guys, they’re all in it. They get it. They get the optionality. They may be complete believers, part believers, partial believers. But even then, if it’s a 1 percent chance of being right and the upside is 100x from here, you’d do this all day.”
No competition?
Bitcoin still has a lot of growing it can do in another 10 years as an asset. If one compares it with other assets, such as gold, the precious metal has had the opportunity to benefit from years of investment and has found its niche as a safe haven.
However, for Bitcoin, in another 10 years, with the foundation it has set, the coin can become an asset that only gets bigger and better for investors.
