Embattled cryptocurrency figure John McAfee has been tweeting from behind bars in Spain ahead of his pending extradition to the United States.
McAfee was arrested in the European country last week and faces charges of tax evasion in America. He is now awaiting extradition to the United States, with the Department of Justice having unsealed an indictment against McAfee earlier this month with a litany of charges against the founder of well-known antivirus software McAfee.
The majority of the tax evasion charges are focused on McAfee’s alleged failure to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018. It’s alleged that that McAfee earned millions of Dollars in income by promoting various cryptocurrencies, consulting for companies, fulfilling speaking engagements as well as selling the rights to his life story for a documentary.
It is worth noting that the indictment does not accuse McAfee of having received any income or having any connection with the McAfee security software company, which its namesake John McAfee had founded in 1987 before resigning seven years later. It is now owned by Intel.
Tweets behind bars
It is still unclear when McAfee will be extradited to the United States to face charges but the elusive figure has somehow seemingly managed to regain access to his personal Twitter account while behind bars in Spain.
Earlier this month McAfee’s wife Janice had released a number of statements on Twitter stating that her and her husband’s accounts were often manned by interns that tweeted on their behalf. However she revealed that McAfee had since regained access to his account and was tweeting in his personal capacity – while remaining mumm on how this was made possible.
McAfee’s latest tweet suggests that the American is faring well in detention, while he also suggested that if anything suspicious were to happen to him, there could be grounds for some sort of foul play.
McAfee’s reference to Epstein relates to the purported suicide of convicted sex offender and now deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead inside his cell in the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York in August 2019. There has been widespread speculation that Epstein did not commit suicide and may have been murdered.
