A widespread Twitter hack appears to have compromised the entire platform. A popular Bitcoin Giveaway scam targeted cryptocurrency influencers and exchanges before moving over the much larger, well-established accounts.
The accounts of both Elon Musk and Bill Gates seem to have been singled out due to their popularity and high follower account. The scam promises to return two times the amount donated to the below Bitcoin account.
The most alarming aspect of this situation is that it may be a compromised Twitter employee, or employee account, that has admin-level access. That is, the perpetrator is able to take control of any Twitter account. Thus far the genuine account holders are able to delete the suspect tweets, but in many, is too late to stop the damage.
Someone is Getting Rich
One of the Bitcoin addresses associate with the hack is extremely active, receiving over 300 donations totaling over $100,000. The donated Bitcoins are currently being sent to other addresses, presumably to cover up the trail. Bitcoin transactions are public and transparent, meaning they can be tracked and monitored.
There are several tools available that will obscure or “mix” Bitcoin transactions. It is unknown if any of the scammed Bitcoins have made their way to these mixing services.
Thus far, Twitter has issued only the following statement.
The cause and resolution are surely forthcoming. Whatever the cause behind this, it demonstrates the fragility inherent in social media platforms.
