Popular non-fungible token marketplace OpenSea has raised $23mln to continue the development of the platform.
OpenSea announced that it had secured a sizable investment from a number of notable investors that have partnered with the firm. The investment has been led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz as well as notable industry participants including Naval Ravikant, Mark Cuban, Tim Ferris, Belinda Johnson, Ben Silbermann, Alexis Ohanian, and Balaji Srinivasan.
The firm’s announcement notes that transaction volume on the OpenSea NFT marketplace has increased by over 100x in the past six months as interest in NFTs continues unabated. The marketplace has provided a platform for a wide variety of content creators and influencers to issue and trade NFTs.
Everyone from artists, musicians, gamers to sportspeople have got involved in the NFT craze and this has led to some mind-boggling prices for various digital goods. A prime example of this would be digital artist ‘Beeple’ selling off an NFT collage that set a new auction record on traditional auction-marketplace Christie’s in March 2021.
Gronk sets the bar high for OpenSea – netting $1.8mln for trading cards
While Beeple’s $69mln digital collage remains the most expensive NFT ever sold, NFL veteran Rob Gronkowski has set the bar high for OpenSea’s NFT marketplace after his recent auction of a collection of digital trading cards on the platform.
As previously reported by The Daily Chain, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end entered the world of NFTs in March as he minted a collection of trading cards on OpenSea. Gronkowski’s Championship Series NFTs highlighted his four NFL titles while the fifth and final “Career Highlight Refractor Card” was created as a tribute to those four successful campaigns.
Gronkowski won three NFL titles with the New England Patriots while his fourth NFL win came alongside quarterback Tom Brady after the pair joined the Buccaneers in 2020.
The four Championship Cards featured 87 digital editions that were up for auction, while the fifth Career Highlight card was a single, stand-alone NFT. The one-off “Career Highlight Refractor Card” netted the highest amount at auction, selling for 229 ETH valued at around $435,000.
The auction lasted for two days and saw a total 349 trading cards sold at auction as well as the one-off Career highlight card to 95 different owners. The total trading value of the auction was 1,014 ETH valued at $1.8 mln.
