Recent reports from a Chinese source claim that the PS5 console, which is proven to be incapable of mining most cryptocurrencies, is somehow adapted to solve cryptographic equations.
So far there’s only one source found with the said allegations. According to a Chinese-based tech gadget blog, the latest Sony Playstation console’s mining capabilities were allegedly unlocked by a tech guru within the country. The tech expert, named Yifan Gu, also claims to be successful in tuning the Macbook Air with an Apple M1 SoC to mine Ethereum.
However, many tech forums are disputing the claims saying the console’s software cannot achieve ETH’s mining power status. The enthusiast provided a photo showing the ETH mining process with the PS5, which had clocked 99MH/s with a power consumption of over 200W.
Tech experts are reluctant to believe the evidence, stating the Sony gaming console graphic card could only achieve a 60MH/s mining power. According to experts, the Sony PS5 has an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT graphic card, which cannot be overclocked past 60MH/s.
Sony PS5 in High Demand
The Sony Playstation family found themselves in demand turmoil after unveiling the latest PlayStation installment. Cryptocurrency miners and gamers swept the entire stock of PS5 within the first few months. The rumors that the gaming console could mine crypto did not do the gaming community justice, as regions like Asia and Africa received a diminishing number of PS5 machines.
Cryptocurrency mining has had its fair share of depleting graphic card stocks. Nvidia, one of the biggest graphic card manufacturers, struggles to meet demands despite being able to unleash various types into the market.
Analysts speculate that the current demand for mining GPUs has exceeded the output capacity by at least 20%. PS5, which has powerful hardware capable of dealing with mining, has taken a while to stock up enough for the whole world to join in the highly acclaimed gaming experience.
Nevertheless, tech experts claim the console software is power and electricity limited and is not enough for cryptographic puzzle solving. Still, miners seem to be optimistic that Yifan’s alleged breakthrough is enough for the console to handle mining activities. The photo evidence given showing PS5 mining Ether could also be fake. Reports suggest the 2D QR code visible in the photo translated to a text saying the photo was for entertainment purposes.
Gamers Suffering on Rumoured Capabilities
Despite several news outlets reporting the ‘PS5 mining Ether’ rumors as truth, many have refuted the claims and are concerned about how much the gaming community is suffering. Late last year, Sony said it plans to release the console to the Asian region in mid-2021. The travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have made supplying PS5 consoles difficult. Additionally, analysts claim if mining capability rumors continue to rise, the rest of the world might not see PS5 consoles on their doorsteps before the end of 2021.
